Persevere for Perseverance
Let’s face it, following Christ can be a difficult walk. Everything that Jesus taught is in direct contradiction to what the world would have us respond. A basic example is when Jesus told us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. To someone who has not renewed their mind to the Word of God this sounds ridiculous. Our own perceived self-entitlement and emotions become a barricade to truly live out what God has told us to do. In this particular example, we love because He loved us first by grace.
With that being said, it can be truly wearisome to forsake the flesh and live fully in the spirit. A continuous renewed mind is the first step in this new life. Understanding Christ’s true heart and character, as well as the characteristics we have in Him lead to a life that is focused on life in abundance. Even as followers of Christ, sometimes the many shots the world takes on us takes a heavy expense, and so it is crucial to be aware of what is going on around you.
Be encouraged, Christ is our best cheerleader and has proven this love over and over again in His Word. James writes, “God, blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and He never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death,” (James 1: 120). Perseverance also unravels into patience and endurance. As we keep pressing into the Father, all three of these virtues become strengthened and allows for the right momentum to tackle a season of waiting or intense battles.
(James 1:2-5) My brothers and sisters, when you have many kinds of troubles, you should be full of joy, because you know that these troubles test your faith, and this will give you patience. Let your patience show itself perfectly in what you do. Then you will be perfect and complete and will have everything you need. But if any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He is generous to everyone and will give you wisdom without criticizing you.
(Romans 5: 2-4) Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.
Although perseverance calls for continued commitment and hope, it is certain that the Lord can take a dire situation and use it for our own benefit and ultimately drawing us closer to Him. Hallelujah!
And so, we leave you with this word,
" Be happy in your confidence, be patient in trouble, and pray continually,” (Romans 12:12).
